Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele sent homecrowd favorite Ipek Soylu out 6-2, 7-5 in her opener at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.
World no.116 Voegele, who started his Istanbul campaign on the third day, comfortably completed the first set 6-2 despite her low first serve percentage. Got broken to fall behind 5-4 in the second, more experienced side Voegele didn’t allow Soylu to take it to a decider.
She won three consecutive games to close the set 7-5 and knocked out 20-year-old wildcard Soylu after 1 hour and 32 minutes. Playing her first clay-court tournament of the season, Voegele said that she’s happy with the win after the surface change.
Voegele will next take on the winner of the match between 2nd seed Yanina Wickmayer and Andreea Mitu.
