Following early exits of top three seeds, 4th seed Kirsten Flipkens also got knocked out of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup. It was world no.129 Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine who scored the upset of the day.

Despite facing 14 break points, Kozlova managed to save 12 of them, while defeating Flipkens for the second time in three meetings. After 1 hour and 44 minutes, Kozlova dismissed last year’s semi-finalist Flipkens 6-3, 6-4 to reach her second quarter-final this season.

She will next take on Anastasija Sevastova. WTA former no.36 Latvian, who’s competing in Istanbul for the third time, upset 8th seed Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-3 in the opening match of the Garanti Koza Arena.
