No. 2 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova reaches first quarter-final since August at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova booked her place in the last eight at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win over qualifier Viktoriya Tomova. Second seed Kuznetsova, who notched her first win since August in the opening round, now advanced into first quarter-final since August.
Saving two set points and winning three games in a row, world no. 28 took the first 7-5. Tomova, who knocked out another qualifier Valentyna Ivakhnenko in the first round, managed to force the decider with 6-4. Kuznetsova was too strong in the final set as she dropped only one game to complete the match in 2 hours and 31 minutes. Up next, the experienced Russian will take on Polona Hercog or Kateryna Bondarenko.
Last year’s semi-finalist and no. 7 seed Irina-Camelia Begu got the better of Christina McHale in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 while Pauline Parmentier knocked out Yulia Putintseva in late night thriller 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to move into TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup quarter-finals.
