Belgian Kirsten Flipkens became the only player to reach second round amongst top four seeds of TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.

World number 58 Kirsten Flipkens defeated young Croat Donna Vekic 7-6, 6-4 and advanced to second round. As her compatriot Yanina Wickmayer’s loss against Andreea Mitu, Flipkens became only player who made last sixteen amongst the top four seeds.

The versatile Belgian didn’t allow her opponent to close the set at 6-5, then completed first set in high-tense tie-break. Donna Vekic fired up 3-0 at the beginning in second set, but quickly lost her momentum while Flipkens changed the pace. No.4 seed grabbed crucial points at the end of second set sealing the victory in straight sets.

Flipkens now has a 3-0 head-to-head record against Vekic whom she has also beaten in 2013 (Linz), and the last one coming just two weeks ago in Katowice. Next up for Flipkens is Kateryna Kozlova who fought past Alexandra Dulgheru 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, 2nd seed Yanina Wickmayer lost her opening match in Istanbul for the second consecutive year. 113-ranked Romanian Andreea Mitu breezed past 7-5, 6-4 over Wickmayer. Mitu will meet Swiss Stephanie Voegele in the next round.
