TOP SEED WENT THROUGH AFTER TIGHT BATTLE

Danish star Caroline Wozniacki battled back against former French Open finalist Sara Errani in three sets and went through to quarter finals. 

2014 İstanbul Cup champion and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki extended her Istanbul streak to six after winning grueling battle against Sara Errani. 28-year old Danish player won the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours 27 minutes as progressed head-to-head record against her 4 to 1.

Errani begins the match very well to had 5-2 lead in the first set. Caroline made a short-living comeback which was ended by Errani’s another break to clinch it from the top seed, 7-5. Wozniacki gained some momentum by three games cushion in the beginning of the second set, which led to 6-3 set score eventually. Errani didn’t look good as she had earlier, made some critical errors at the final set. Firing up with the quality low balls, Wozniacki sustained her lead by taking it 6-3. In this high-class game, combined figures of winners outnumbered unforced errors 62 to 49.

Final match of the day lasting only 71 minutes in centre court, Croatian Donna Vekic advanced to second round after beating Alja Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2. She will face with 7th seed Irina-Camelia Begu, last year’s semi-finalist.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari made her first quarter final of the year in Istanbul. She easily defeated to injury-marred Serb Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-1 in 67 minutes. 22-year old player will play her second Istanbul quarter final after painful loss in 2016 edition. Her opponent will be qualifier Arantxa Rus, who knocked out Montenegrin player Danka Kovinic 2-6, 6-2 and 6-0 in hottest midday conditions.
