Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari defeated top seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round encounter in TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.

Top seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova lost her opening match 6-2, 6-3 at the Garanti Koza Arena on tuesday in TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup. Slovak player, who had only two main draw wins in WTA events this year, got the first blood but didn’t managed to take a set over qualifier Maria Sakkari.

Greece’s number 1 Sakkari, also qualified for main draw in Australian Open, turned the table in the first round from 0-2 and a break point down. She rallied past Schmiedlova 6-2 in the first set. Similarly, Schmiedlova took early lead in the second with a break, but Sakkari again overcame two times break down. 20-year old Greek completed the match in one hour 37 minutes.

In the presser, Sakkari said “Istanbul is like my hometown. I like to play here. She (Schmiedlova) is the highest-ranked player I ever beat in my career. Satistfied very much with my overall performance. Now I’m eagerly waiting my second round match here”.

Around the outside courts, Tsvetana Pironkova reached second round after an easy win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus. The experienced Bulgarian won 6-2, 6-2 against world no. 99 and made another second round in Istanbul.

Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh reached to second round after saved a match point against Karin Knapp. Hsieh won the grueling match 6-7, 7-5 and 6-1 and advanced to second round, where she play versus Greek Maria Sakkari.
