Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari has progressed to quarter-finals at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.

20-year old Greek up-and-comer Maria Sakkari became first player to reach quarter finals in Istanbul. Following her stunning upset against top seed Schmiedlova, she beat Su-Wei Hsieh from Chinese Taipei in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 on Court 1.

With the windy condition qualifier Sakkari served 82 percent first serve and controlled the game against Hsieh, who is former doubles world number one.

Sakkari clinched her first-ever quarter final berth in WTA level in previous nine editions, also became first Greece representative in Istanbul Cup last eight line-up.

Montenegrin 5th seed Danka Kovinic is next up for Maria Sakkari as she made no mistake after two struggling sets against Tsvetana Pironkova. It took nearly two hours for Kovinic to take down the most appearanced player of the tournament Pironkova 7-5, 7-6.
