DEFENDING CHAMP SHOCKED BY CIRSTEA

A few hours later of top seed’s exit, 2015 champion Lesia Tsurenko knocked out by qualifier Sorana Cirstea in two sets.

Ukrainian defending champion and 3rd seed Lesia Tsurenko lost in opening round at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup. Former world no.21 Cirstea stuns Tsurenko 6-3, 6-4 in 79 minutes with her solid baseline game. She broke Tsurenko’s serve five times while earning 70 percent points on her second serve.

Cirstea, who got only second match win in 2016 WTA main draws, will face local star Cagla Buyukakcay in the next round. 26-year-old from Romania had defeated Buyukakcay in straight sets in their only meeting in the 2013 Fed Cup tie.

Reka-Luca Jani was another player to reach second round after passing the qualifying stage. Hungarian world no.266 ended the hopes of Turkish youngster Ayla Aksu 6-3, 6-4 despite trailing 3-0 in second.

7th seed Katerina Bondarenko beat Olga Govortsova to clinch last 16 berth in main draw. After two and a half hour long battle, Bondarenko knocked out Belarusian rival 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Qualifier Kristina Kucova also written into second round outclassing Julia Glushko 6-3, 6-2.
