CHILDHOOD FRIENDS STEALS THE SHOW

Second-time WTA-level pairing Chinese duo Chen Liang and Zhang Shuai secured as doubles champions at TEB BNP Paribas İstanbul Cup. 

Chinese players Chen Liang and her childhood friend Zhang Shuai secured their first title together in WTA by beating Xenia Knoll/Anna Smith 6-4, 6-4 in final. Doubles specialist 29 year-old Chen and her long time friend saved eight out of 11 break points in final and broke five times of opponent’s serves. Chinese pair completes their straight sets victory after 79 minutes as securing first title together. In total, Chen Liang grabbed her sixth tour level crown while Zhang Shuai getting her fifth.

Chan Liang and Zhang Shuai became first-ever titlist from China in tournament history.

Zhang Shuai explained some interesting facts about their longtime friendship, “We have been played our first ever tennis match against each other in age of 10. From that time, we’re close friends. She (Chen) really helped me today to winning this title. I’m appreciated for this”, she said.

Switzerland’s Xenia Knoll and Anna Smith of Great Britain, finished the tournament as runner-ups. Knoll tagged as finalist second time, after taking walkover in the 2016 doubles final.
